The Birth-Day Souvenir [Birthday]

Undated, but the first dedication from brother to sister is dated 1866. 15 boards, heavily illuminated in colour and gilt on both sides (save 1 page that is only illuminated on one side), each interleaved with a blank page. All edges gilt; endpapers marbled, pages are a little kinked some loose . A pious admonition to spend one's days wisely, it is full of finger-waggingisms, such as, 'Life, however short, is made still shorter by waste of time.' (Johnson). Had I been the recipient, M. J. Millard, I might have been less than delighted (it is a very pretty book, though), and it seems as though Ms Millard and then perhaps her descendants wrote her siblings' dates of birth on the page following the heavily decorated title page. Solidly bound and blind embossed in a dark raspberry morocco. Part of the front section of the book is loose. Some foxing to frontmatter, and indeed throughout, but it affects the interleaving pages more than the illuminated boards.
